A day in the life of a baby

Wandsworth Nursery Insights & Tips

Adjusting to life as a new mum can be a daunting prospect. After all, you’re now responsible for a tiny human that relies solely on you to keep them alive, happy, and well.

Whether you’re a new mum, or you’ve just welcomed another little one into your growing family, you will quickly discover that your new born does a lot more than sleep all the time.

As soon as your baby is born, you’ll find yourself in a crazy whirlwind as you adjust to life with your little one. You’ll not only feel like you’ve known your baby for your whole life, but it’s highly likely that you won’t be able to imagine a time when they weren’t in it.

And from the moment you leave the hospital, the fun begins….

It is in those first few hours that your motherly instincts will really kick in. Those early cries might catch you off guard, especially if you don’t know why they’re crying, but you will soon know whether they need their nappy changing, a cuddle, or a feed.

Here at Wandsworth Preschool, we’ve had plenty of practice taking care of babies of all ages, helping them to grow, learn and develop at crucial stages of their life.

We’ve created a short insight into the life of a newborn baby.

Wake up call

As a new mum, you will have no set routine, no bedtime and no concept of whether it’s morning or night… It’s all worth it though, we promise!

Feed

When your baby wakes up, it’s highly likely that they will be ready for a feed! Once you have fed your little one and put them back down, make sure you find the time to grab some food too, as during those early months, this can become near on impossible.

Embrace the silence

Once your baby has fed, you’ve burped them, cuddled them and got them ready, embrace the silence and find some time to close your eyes and take a moment to reflect on what a great job you are doing.

Lunchtime already?

Once you have napped, tided up and stared in awe at the beautiful human you have managed to make, now it’s time to spend some time with your baby again. It’s highly likely that they will be ready for their next feed, their nappy might need changed and remember the importance of bonding!

Skin to skin

During those all important early days babies love skin to skin contact and from the moment your little one is born, it’s important that you talk to them as much as possible as this can help to develop their language skills.

Night time again…

A typical night time feed routine looks like this…

  • 10 p.m. – Change & feed baby.
  • 12:30 a.m. – Change & feed baby.
  • 3 a.m. – Change & feed baby.
  • 5:30 a.m. – Change & feed baby.
  • 7 a.m. – Change & feed baby.

The days will truly fly over… so through the tiredness… the sleepless nights and the tantrums… you will quickly realise that these are the moments you should treasure forever.
